Selective Mutism

What is it?

If you, or your child, has trouble talking aloud or using an audible voice when they are outside their comfort zone, then selective mutism might be the problem. Selective mutism is an early expression of social anxiety in children and may last a lifetime when improperly treated.

How we treat it?

Successful treatment uses exposure-based techniques to help your child learn to feel confident and use their normal speaking voice in all settings. Treatment needs to address social anxiety and not just using speech so your child becomes comfortable outside their safety zone and feels free to speak up and speak out. Parent training in proven ways to promote social self-confidence and independent use of speech is also important. Our team uses exposure games to help younger children make the process fun and engaging. We go with you into your community to practice successful ways for your child to be heard and known because they can speak for themselves. If you are an adult or teen with selective mutism, our staff can work with you to overcome the obstacles that interfere with feeling free to share your voice.
