If you or your child has difficulty doing activities, attending school, being alone, or sleeping alone, then you might have separation anxiety. Both children and adults can have separation anxiety. Many children with this problem find sleepovers, sleep away camp, field trips and being out of view of their parents difficult.
Successful treatment uses gradual exposure therapy to help your child feel confident and competent to be separate from you. We work on independence skills so your child can do all the things their peers do, like waiting alone for you, being home with a babysitter, attending parties and social gatherings without a parent present, going to sleepovers, school and camp. If you are an adult, we help you practice becoming independent and able to do activities without having to have a partner, friend, child or pet present for you can feel confident and relaxed no matter where you go.
