Paruresis (Being Pee Shy)

What is it?

If you find it difficult to use public restrooms or to urinate when you think others might notice, then you might have paruresis. Men are more likely to suffer from this problem and often feel embarrassed by the knowledge they might not be able to initiate urination when they feel pressured. Paruresis might even cause you to avoid social situations or to need to use a catheter to relieve yourself.

How we treat it?

Successful treatment uses a variety of cognitive behavioral interventions and gradual exposure-based therapy to help you restore your ability to urinate in restrooms outside your safety zone. Therapy helps you develop self-confidence and overcome embarrassment, so you no longer must worry about where you travel or how much liquid you drink.
